Spring Ripe with Tournament Opportunities

Spring in Montana will bring many opportunities to grown and test our skills we work so hard to develop year round.

Starting with our semiannual FUN Tournament on February 11th, there will be opportunities all across the state.

The MTC FUN tournament is for MTC students only and is held right here in our dojang. The cost to enter is just $25 (less than 1/2 the cost of other tournaments). It is the perfect event for tournament first timers and for everyone who wants to bang the dust off before the Montana Spring Tournament season gets under way. We also use this as a time to teach the martial artists, referees, coaches, parents and tournament staff how best to fill their roll or multiple rolls. Sign ups will be available later this month (watch the bulletin boards) and will come out int he February Newsletter, but mark your calendars now. Every family who signs up in advance to volunteer (and volunteers) will get a $5 per hour credit toward the cost of their FUN Tournament registration.

Also this spring MTC students are preparing for tournaments large and small in Montana and across the country. There will be Montana Tournaments in Livingston, Great Falls and Billings. With us co-hosting the state tournament in Missoula with the MTAcademy. The dates for these tournaments are not set yet, but stay tuned, information will be available soon.

We encourage ALL of our student to participate in tournaments. It is the greatest opportunity to experience a safe but challenging test that each martial artist will come away with a huge leap in personal growth.

We also have groups preparing for the US Open in Las Vegas, National Collegiates at MIT in Boston and Nationals in Dallas. This year's Nationals team will consist of martial artists of all ages and belt levels from the 6 year old yellow belt to the 44 year old black belt. MTC Ski Day

Join us for our annual Missoula Taekwondo Center Ski Day at Discovery Ski Area on January 21st.

We caravan to the hill, eat lunch together in the lodge, have a group picture and ski 1 run as a group. We got a good group rate so adult lift tickets are $30 and child lift tickets are $15. There are also good deals on rentals and half day lessons. The sign up sheet is on the counter and to be included int he discount pricing please sign up and pay by January 13th. You are welcome to join us if you do not sign up by the 13th but you will need to pay the regular price for skiing. Also, if you have a season pass please join in our festivites. Better start doing our snow dances now!!!

Looking closely you will see some changes to the schedule. On Tuesday and Thursday we have added a new yellow to senior yellow belt class for 4-6 year olds from 445-530. This class will be for 4-6 year old students who are already in the T and Th 445-545 class and is open to other M and W students who wish to switch. On Friday you will find a New Flips and Tricks class that will focus on building the fundamentals and developing the skills used in demonstrations like the one we just put on at Southgate Mall. The first class will be Friday the 13th 645-745. This class is $5 per class or the first one is Free for Black Belt Club members and is open for blue belts and above.

Also on Friday we have changed the format a bit. All who wish to participate in the Competition Prep classes should attend the 515-645 class. This class is for all students who know their forms and/or the basics of sparring and wish to progress by polishing and developing their skills for testing, tournaments or just to feel like you are doing your best all the time.

We are so very grateful to Ms. Kim Sturre for organizing the January 7th Dojang cleaning and for all the others who volunteered their Saturday to spiff up our dojang. It was a delightful surprise to have it so sparkling when we returned from Master William's wedding. Master and Mrs. Rosbarsky may be the ones to pay the mortgage on the structure at 2305 Grant Street, but we hope you all feel like it belongs to each of you as well. That your being here makes MTC a more perfect whole. For those that took the time to contribute and take ownership, so to speak, by contributing they now can experience an invigorated sense of pride in our TKD home. Without each of you we would fail to thrive. Each student and family at MTC offers a true part of themselves that when added to all of our other parts makes a whole that is truly greater than its parts.

Classes Over "Break"

We are all looking forward to the rest of our Holiday Season and are praying for a white, white Christmas so we can enjoy an exciting ski season too.

We highly encourage the time between Christmas and New Years as time devoted to your own personal families, however, if you are missing your TKD family too much over the break (we too go through withdrawals during any time off) please join us for some all level classes. We will hold classes on the 26th and 28th from 4:30-5:30.

Also, if you know you will have lots of time to devote to TKD over the break, consider being part of the Missoula Taekwondo Center First Night Demonstration Team. We will practice the 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st. The Demo Team is for everyone and you will learn some fantastic skills so please don't think you have to be a wiz to be part of it. Show Your Stuff as part of our Demonstration Team

The Missoula Taekwondo Center Demonstration Team has been participating in Missoula's First Night Celebration for 10 years now and we have a reputation for putting on quite a show. What makes the crowds gather to watch are not just the high flying kicks and powerful board and brick breaking but that the audience can see themselves in each of the performers. Our demo teams have always been made up of all ages and belt levels and we are most proud of the diversity represented in our yearly performance.

This year we invite you. Come be part of this fantastic group and share with your family and community your passion and hard work.

Practices begin December 1st and will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-7:30 until December 20th. There will also be daily practices December 26-30, 5:30-6:30. On New Year's Eve we will begin practicing at 10AM. The performance is December 31st at 2PM in JC Penney Court at Southgate Mall. (Click here for Calendar) this is the Kick Off for Missoula's First Night celebration. Our performers will all receive a First Night button that will allow them to partake in the city wide activities.

1st Montana TKD Women's Retreat

The first ever Montana Taekwondo Association Women's Retreat was held at Fairmont Hot Springs on December 3rd and 4th.

The Montana Taekwondo Association is our state governing body that has been organized to foster growth of Taekwondo in our state and to offer a full and enriching experience state wide to Taekwondo practitioners. This new sub group is being formed to ensure that the needs of the MTA's female membership are being met.

The gathering featured time for fellowship, tabling and discussion of ideas and decisions on the structure and function of the group. The New MTA Women's Leadership Council was formed. Eighteen women from 7 different schools attended.

Polish your Poomsae at MTC with World Silver Medalist Akiko Reyes

The Montana Taekwondo Association is bringing us a fantastic opportunity to train with one of the greatest Poomsae athletes from the US.

MTC will host Mrs. Akiko Reyes and Manny Reyes on December 10th and 11th for a Poomsae seminar that has something for everyone. Ma'am Akiko focuses on each individual performing the poomsae that best expresses themselves. They are well versed in current Sport Poomsae guidelines and what is looked for in national and international competition, but the greatest element they will bring to us is their exuberant energy. Ma'am Akiko helps athletes pin point and enhance their strengths while giving them the tools to work through their challenges.

The weekend will be taught in 4 sessions.

December 10th

Session 1 - 9am-1pm

WTF Guidelines--covering what is currently expected in Sport Poomsae competition in WTF tournaments including 2012 USAT Nationals and US Open.

Session 2 - 2pm-5pm

Colored Belts- for all aged colored belts who are interested in discovering their strengths and getting tools to improve on their most challenging areas.

December 11th

Session 3 - 8am-12pm

Black Belts - for all aged black belts who wish to enhance their own style in forms performance.

Session 4 - 1pm-4pm

2012 US Open and Nationals Athletes--for Sport Poomsae athletes competing upcoming National and International events.

The cost for MTA members is $35 for 1-2 sessions or $50 for 3-4 sessions. Non MTA members are welcome to join for an additional $25.

Paddle Ball Tournament

The most anticipated tournament of the year is nearly upon us. Now scheduled on Sunday, December 18th at 10AM the 3rd Annual MTC Paddle Ball Tournament is nearly upon us. Be sure to register your 3 member team by December 15th and pay the $15 team registration fee. Also this year there is a pot luck sign up that each team must contribute to, so that we all may keep up our energy throughout the competition.

There will be a kids division and a teen/adult division.

Creating a team identity is highly encouraged through a team jersey, team cheers, mascots, theme songs and such.

Please join us to play or watch. It is always a very fun time.

You on the National Team?

We encourage all MTC students to envision themselves as part of the 2012 Missoula Taekwondo Center National Team.

Every year a group of students from MTC travel to the USA Taekwondo Nationals. You (or your child) have the potential to be part of this team. The first (and really the only) criteria for being a member of this team is the desire to be and do something great. Together and individually we will train, fundraise, travel and grow.

OK, inall honesty, you have to do more than just have a desire to share in this experience, you will also then need to put forth the effort to grow physically and mentally, but once you DECIDE the experience will begin to unfold in front of you. This experience has been life changing for everyone who chose to step in the arena, so to speak.

Being part of this team is realistic for nearly every one of our students. You can compete at nationals from the age of 6 through 106 and from yellow to black belt.

We are kicking off the season with an informational meeting at 5:30 on November 9th. Everyone who has a desire to compete or simply a curiosity should attend this meeting . We will discuss what it takes, in all areas, to have a positive experience on the MTC National Team.

We are so very grateful for the loving, giving, supportive and energetic family we have at Missoula Taekwondo Center. You all continue to amaze us when it comes time for us to host an event. When we call for volunteers an army shows up and together we pour ourselves into creating a meaningful experience for all of the participants, referees, coaches and spectators.

The 2011 Missoula Taekwondo Championships was a spectacular success. In the state of Montana we shine as a working unit.

The NEW Montana Women's Council

For ALL women who care what TKD can do in the lives of the Martial Artists they love.

The purpose of the MTA Women's Council is to bring together the many strong, resourceful, intelligent women involved in Montana Taekwondo to further the interests of women, girls and all Taekwondoists in our state.

ALL Women ages 15+ involved in Taekwondo (as martial artist and their families) in the state of Montana are invited to join us on December 3rd and 4th at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort (near Butte) to connect, rejuvenate and develop a vision for the future.

A Friendly Reminder-Focus on the Martial Artists on the Mat

We love that our Taekwondo school facilitates many positive interactions on and off the mat. We love to see parents supporting their own children and growing to know and love the other children and their family members who inhabit the benches around them. And we love that families bring their other children to the dojang to partake of the atmosphere.

We do, however, need to remind everyone that our focus when in the Dojang still needs to be on the individuals who are working hard to learn new skills and grow on the mat. Please keep your conversations at a whisper during class. The many talking voices create a roar that makes it hard for the teacher to be heard. And please keep children who are off the mat quiet and in check so they are not drawing attention from those who are here to work. We thank you and know that we all have the same goals-encouraging our kids to be their best possible selves.

Missoula Taekwondo Championships

All MTC Students are invited to compete at the Missoula Taekwondo Championships on October 22nd at the RAM Activity Center. There will be competition in sparring and poomsae with special divisions for disabled individuals. We will also feature Sport Poomsae and Electronic Hogu exhibitions.

A special rate of $40 is available to MTC students. Pick up the registration and info at MTC and turn it in by October 19th.

Dearest MTC Family, we choose to host this event every year because of you, our TKD family. Tournament preparation takes a concerted effort by The Rosbarsky's and our entire TKD family, and, in the end, it is so worth it. We watch our students and Taekwondoists from all around the state (and a few neighboring ones as well) step into the ring and give their hearts and bodies a test. Most will go home carrying 1 or more trophies and all will leave having experienced something great--a life enriching, boundary testing, self-building FUN event.

What has always made this the greatest Montana Taekwondo event is the group effort put forth by our MTC Family. We have opportunities for every person to contribute to the day.

The booster club will be looking for donations of food to make the National Team Concessions a profitable venture for our Nationals athletes.
Help is needed to set up and take down the event.
Door sales, equipment sales, computer operators, ring runners, hospitality coordinator, button sales, ring coordinators and oodles of other positions are available to be filled.
After the tournament is taken down those who volunteered the day will be treated dinner at China Garden as a thank you.

Class Too Big? A New Yellow-Sr. Green Starts Now

We have opened a new class on Monday and Wednesday at 6:15 for Yellow to Sr. Green Belts.(class schedule)

The class size is limited to 12 so ask Mrs. Rosbarsky ASAP to get your name on the list.

The curriculum will be the same as the Tuesday 4:45 class and we encourage those with the flexibility in their schedules to try the switch. We love each of our students and want to give you each a positive Taekwondo experience and this new class option will afford us greater time with each student. So please consider making the switch.

Halloween Party

The Annual MTC Halloween Part and Haunted House is coming up. The party will be held Saturday, October 29th.

The event will include the return of our Haunted House, a collective effort that is conceptualized by Master Rosbarsky and Master Glenn Parks and haunted by many MTC students. Don't worry we are able to modify the scariness depending on the group touring at any given time so it is appropriate for all ages.

We will be resurrecting the costume contest with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes. Once again wearing your dobok and coming as a "martial artist" will land you out front tied to a telephone pole with your belt.

There is no cost to attend this event but we ask that everyone brings 5 nonperishable food items to be donated to the Missoula Food Bank or $5.

This will be a pot luck dinner. Please sign up by Thursday, October 27th to bring your favorite main dish, side dish, or dessert. Or, if you do not wish to cook, there will be many other things to sign up to bring as well. The night;s event include:

Belt Test Date Changed

Due to the move of the Kalispell Tournament date to November 12th, we will now be holding our next belt test on November 5th.

We will hold 3 tests on Friday. November 5th. The plan is for those testing for yellow to test from 4:30-5:30. Those testing for senior yellow to senior green should test from 5:30-6:45 and those testing for Blue belt and up should plan to be there 6:45-8:30. It is possible these times will change based on the number of people who sign up for the tests and what the distribution of belts looks like.

A final schedule will be posted by Wednesday, November 2nd.

Use your Booster Club Funds to pay for this Belt Test (or a tournament or a new uniform.)
Fill out a form at least 1 week in advance of the sign up deadline. Forms and drop box are located on the wall to the right of the dressing rooms.

We are hyperaware of financial constraints as they relate to extracurriculars. Taekwondo participation requires a dedicated amount of funds each month for the class portion, and participating in functions outside of class are sometimes not even looked at as an option by some families because of costs associated. The MTC Booster Club is here to make that a non-issue. Master Rosbarsky Returns from China

I landed in China at about 4 in the morning and it all started. Shenzhen Universiade banners and volunteers were everywhere. It was obvious we were about to be part of something special. We made it to the athlete village and received a duffel bag full of stuff. We received Shirts, shorts, shoes, warm-ups, and even noise-cancelling headphones. That afternoon athletes from all countries loaded into 200 buses and traveled an hour and a half to the Spring Cocoon, an immense arena built for this event, for opening ceremonies. We walked in the side of the arena to the roar of thousands of people. I have never been so proud to be an American, walking in behind the flag with 450+ US athletes at one of the world’s most prestigious events.

We spent the next seven days acclimating, training and supporting the USA at various events. Our first two days of competition were Poomsae. Our competitors faced current world champions from all over the world and performed in stellar fashion. We failed to walk away with any medals in forms. Sparring took place for the following four days. I coached two athletes the first day, two the second, one the third and one the last.

All of them fought incredibly hard and well. Everyone we faced had some sort of international experience. For some of our athletes this was their first international competition. , and they were facing the very best in the world. Some of the highlights for me were coaching Tasha Pruter into the quarter finals and coaching Stepfon Westbrook to the first ever male bantam weight win for the US at the Universiade.

Our last fighter, Aziza Chambers, won bronze in the women’s division.

Getting a Varsity Letter in Taekwondo

We are embarking on a historic year for Taekwondo Teens. This is the first full year where MCPS students can earn a Letter in Taekwondo.

All eligible students should inform Mrs. Rosbarsky of their intent to letter by September 9^th.

Requirements to letter include: having a sports physical, being a USAT member, attaining a 2^nd geup red belt, competing in a MTA tournament, maintaining a 5 hour per week average of Taekwondo practice, obtaining a copy of grades from the parents monthly.

This is a great opportunity to gain recognition for the hard work you have and will continue to do in pursuit of your own potential.

Back in the Swing of Things – Classes and Tournaments

Fall brings routine back to our lives and with it a more consistent TKD attendance. We look forward to having you all in our lives and a steady basis again.

We spent a great summer with camps, our own and those taught by Grand Master Park, tournaments, nationally and abroad and lots of great Missoula summer activities. As a side note, next summer we will hold the same camps and will add camps based on your input. All of our camps were at capacity so when sign ups are available, get your name on there early.

Master and Mrs. Rosbarsky are joined by Master Parks, Mr. Watson, Mr. Mikkola, Ms. Hunton, Ms Ardiana and Ms Jes Curtis on the mat and at the front desk to teach and guide our families along their TKD path. We care what you think and welcome hearing from you on any subject TKD related or otherwise. We have a wealth of knowledge in all of our black belts and other TKD family members and we highly encourage our TKD family supporting each other in the dojang and in life outside of TKD.

To help all our students learn more and excel we have restructured Friday classes and are excited to see where this will take us. Come try out a new class.

To start your tournament season off right, we are once again holding the MTC FUN Tournament on September 17^th. This is the perfect event for all MTC Taekwondoists, those who are new to tournaments and even for those who are new to taekwondo. This event is low stress and low cost enough to suit the most timid beginners. Registration begins September 6^th and ends September 16^th.

The Fall tournament season will continue with tournaments in October and November in Missoula and Kalispell.

Belt Testing

Hopefully I can answer some of the many questions about tests and open the doors for more questions to be answered.
The next belt test will be held on September 23rd. We generally hold group colored belt tests every 6 to 8 weeks, however, students should test every 3-4 months. Colored Belts should have a minimum of 2 tips to test.
Poomsae is a required element at each test, as are kicks, strikes, blocks, self-defense and terminology. White belts age 7 and older are required to know Taeguek 1, white belts age 4-6 will perform Basic Form 1 (with or without help). Yellow belts and above will be tested over 1 new Taeguek and 1 new Palgwe at each test and should retain all previous forms. When testing for Sr. Yellow one should know T2 and P1, for Green T3 and P2, and so on.

It will have the requirements in .pdf format and several pictures and video to help with the different kicks, strikes, blocks and stances. (The test may not be limited to the requirements list, but also include other techniques learned in class).

Functional Fitness is a group fitness class taking place at Missoula Taekwondo Center. It is called functional fitness because every movement you will do in this class is a natural, and functional body movement. You will jump, lift, climb, throw, push, run and much more. We use our own body weight, medicine balls, Bulgarian bags, and much more. Workouts are created and led by trainer Keane Hamilton. Keane is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and has a B.S. in Exercise Science. He was also one of Master Rosbarsky’s first Taekwondo students.

TKD Logistics (PARKING)

Getting to Missoula TKD by foot, bike, bus or car is relatively easy.

We enjoy our central location very much, but upon arrival many of our students and their parents confront a different logistical problem—parking. We are great proponents of parents being involved with their children’s journey in TKD by actively watching class whenever possible. With that in mind, if you will be staying for the entire class please consider parking in the Northeast corner of the Mall parking lot. This will free up spaces closer for quick in and out and hopefully alleviate some parking stress for those who live in the neighborhood. Also if you park near the railroad tracks please be mindful of the space trains need to pass through.

Fall tests will be September 23rd and November 11th.

We will be closed for Holidays September 5th, November 23-25th and December 22nd to January 2nd. These dates are the same dates Missoula County Public School are closed for holidays (not PIR or conference days.)

Within the new schedule you will find changes to Friday and some detailed descriptions of classes we have had and will continue to have.

Note a General Poomsae Class which will introduce poomsae in a quicker format to cover more of the forms. And the Competition Team classes which focus more on presentation elements of the forms and on sparring. All of the Competition Team classes will focus on self improvement through striving to attain skills that are only within our reach with a maximal level of effort.

Ninja Camp

The much anticipated Ninja Camp is nearly upon us. We will be accepting a few more campers. The first ever Ninja Camp is August 9-13 (Tuesday to Saturday), 9:30AM to Noon for 8 year olds and up. This camp will be a melding of Taekwondo and Parkour and will culminate with a performance for parents on Saturday. Sign ups are at the Dojang on the bulletin board. Registration Form.

Dae Myung Camp with Grand Master Jae Ho Park

A very rare opportunity to train with Grand Master Park and his son Edison Park are coming up August 26-28.

Grand Master Martin of Butte has coordinated an International Dae Myung Moodoo Federation Camp at Clark Canyon Bible Camp near Dillon, Montana. The schools attending are IDMF schools from around Montana (MTC included), New York, California and possibly Rome, Italy.

We will receive instruction in Taekwondo, Judo and Hapkido. Aside from the instruction in techniques participants will come home with tremendous exposure to the Philosophies of the Martial Arts we hold so dear. Grand Master Park, Master Edison and Grand Master Martin are great men and gifted teachers who have much to offer us in the way of knowledge and humanity.

This camp is open to ALL Belts and ages! We can not stress enough what a life changing opportunity this is and how seizing this moment is tremendously important.

The cost of camp is $130 which includes meals, lodging and instruction without instruction the cost is $95. This means families can attend. All campers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Poomsae Practice

Lately I have been fielding many questions about how to gain proficiency in Poomsae. Commonly I hear, “why don’t they practice enough in class to “get it”?” The most simply put answer is “If we practiced in class enough to really “get it” we would not have time for anything else.”

Poomsae, being a set pattern, is one element of Taekwondo that we can become proficient at with practice on our own, and, in fact, will not get past a basic level of proficiency without practice outside of class.

We recommend using the Powerful Poomsae DVDs to ensure correct practice at home. These DVDs feature Master R and are great for all colored belts at MTC. We have them on hand and they are also available at amazon.com.

To have proficiency in Poomsae carving out a spot for it in your daily routine is a must.

Off to Nationals– A Journey to Their Best Selves

The 2011 National Team from MTC is on their way to San Jose (heehee) to compete in sparring and poomsae with athletes from all around the US.

Lydia Rosbarsky, Scott Graham, Hunter Goodman, Jeff Quackenbush, Austin Graef, Taiga Gammell, Dylan Ardiana, Claire Zellmer, Abbey Ardiana and Amanda Rosbarsky have been training and preparing since the Fall of 2010 for this event.

It has been a great gift to witness the transformation in their ability, confidence and overall presence. Working toward the goal of this competition has, of course, improved their technique but it is the shift in their spirit that is the most awe-some part to observe.

Through this experience each of them will enhance their lives with more than toned muscles and gold , silver and bronze medals, they are truly becoming the best possible humans they can be.

Friday Competition Classes take the place of Poomsae and Sparring

The new Friday format is working out great. We are enjoying it and getting good feedback in the form of comments and through improved performance by participants.

We are currently holding classes for Poomsae and Sparring combined. White through Senior Green Belts have class 5-6PM on Fridays. Blue to Black Belts are 6-7PM on Fridays.

This new format is to put us all in the right place to advance our skills in Poomsae and Sparring. If we constantly perform at the same relaxed level without pushing ourselves we will not have the ability to step it up when we are called on for it in Taekwondo and in life. We strive to make Missoula Taekwondo Center a safe, encouraging environment to put your self “out there” and make huge gains in your taekwondo and life skills.

Camp with Grandmaster Park

Master Rosbarsky’s instructors, Grand Masters Martin Martin and Jae Ho Park are putting on a Taekwondo and Judo Training Camp at the Clark Canyon Bible Camp near Dillon Montana (map) August 26th-28th. This is a tremendous opportunity to train with 2 of the greatest instructors to ever influence Montana Martial Artists.

Summer Camps at MTC

We have finished the very popular Lil Kickers and Kickin’ the Summer Off Right Camps and now look forward to some new camps in July and August.

Powerful Poomsae will be July18th-22nd. Mrs. Rosbarsky will not just teach forms but also how to add your own flavor and personalize your forms so you (and your audience) enjoy your performance.

Green Belts and above, all ages are welcome 9:30-11:30. Red and Black Belts only 12:30-2:30. Red and Black belts are recommended to attend both sessions. $85 for 1 session or $150 for both. 10% Early Bird discount by June 24th. (MTC Black Belt Instructors also receive an additional 10% discount on both sessions.)

Teen camp for MTC students age 13+. This camp includes an overnight at the Rosbarsky home. This has been a great time for our MTC Teens to work on their Taekwondo together and get to hang out and strengthen the bonds that are already there due to their common ties at MTC.

The purpose of these camps ends up being so much greater than just to learn some new stuff or to have a place for the kids to spend the time and be entertained. Campers come out of camp having accomplished something great with their time-they are becoming their best possible selves. Master Rosbarsky to Coach World University Team

In April athletes from around the US traveled to the University of California-Davis to compete in the 2011 National Collegiates. The black belt athletes who won their respective divisions will now travel to the World University Games at Shenzhen, China.

Master Rosbarsky has been asked to be part of the coaching staff for this highly competitive team. He will travel to China to coach the team at the WUG and to Mexico for the high altitude team training camp.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Master R to gain a lot of international experience and for the Collegiate National Team to be positively effected by our loving, intelligent and hard working coach. The greatest aspect of this is the positive effects this will have on wave upon wave of MTC students. for years to come we will be reaping the rewards from this expansion of our collective knowledge and our wider field of vision. It may truly make the world a smaller place for our aspiring martial artists and make what was once a far off goal a tangible carrot just out of our reach that will be fully attainable with some purposeful practice.

Congratulations and good luck to Master Rosbarsky for being the kind of coach that others look to to lead our promising athletes. We know you are the right person for the position and look forward to the fires that you will ignite with this experience.

Every year we are impressed with the quality of the High School graduates from our TKD family, and this year we are brimming with talented, driven and perfectly poised martial artists.

In naming specific MTC students and alumnus I may miss some students from the past and I apologize for that, but here are the current (and a few recent past) graduates. The MTC Class of 2011 is Mr. Andy Mikkola, Mr. Kyle Hammond, Mr. Shibu Arens, Lisa Dallapiazza, Kelsie Maricelli, Will Hunt, Alex Geizler, Jeannie Williams, Shaun Bummer and Matt Dollar. Also Ms. Karyn Resch has graduated summa cum laude from Boise State.

Dinner and a Show (with Kick-a-thon)

Join us for some great entertainment and tasty dishes. On Friday May 6th from 6pm-9pm.

The main dish will be Master R's Korean Barbque Beef (Bulgogi) which will be accompanied by everyone's favorite dishes.

The entertainment will be provided by our multi talented TKD family (that means you). Sign up at the dojang to be included in the line up. Act can consist of any type of talent that is entertaining for all ages. The time limit per act is 3 minutes. Please see Mrs. Rosbarksy if you have questions or have special considerations.

We also will hold the Kick-a-thon during the Dinner and a Show. All MTC students may participate in the kick-a-thon by gather ing pledges in advance and kicking as many times as they can in 1 minute. This is a super easy and fun MTC Booster Club fundraiser.

Again this year we will have a silent auction with many great items like a custom made Belt Rack, dental cleaning and whitening worth $275, golf lessons from golf professional David Owens. The Booster Club and MTC Junior and Senior National Team would greatly appreciate your donated items to be auctioned off.

You may also purchase $5 raffle tickets for a Kona Mountain Bike worth $1400 donated by the Missoula Bike Works.

Funds from the Silent Auction, ticket sales and individual Kick-a-thon funds will be used for our athletes and coaches to offset the expenses associated with competing at and traveling to USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics and Senior Nationals this summer.

This is an incredibly affordable , evening of fun, food and fellowship for your whole family and our whole (TKD) family.

A Quick Note From Master Rosbarsky

When an adult is asked to look back at the parenting style of their own parents and are asked to evaluate their up bringing, they always say the same thing: "I'm grateful that my parents made me ______".

Or, "I'm glad they never let me quit _______".

I understand how tiring it is at times. But I know it is my job to be Lydia and Edison's parent above all. I tell them often, "Sometimes we get to be friends, but I am always your Dad. And sometimes when I'm being your Dad, we are not friends."

If our parents didn't set rules, push, love inspire and point out where we did something wrong, how would we end up? I know myself, if it was up to me, broccoli would not have been served at the dinner table.

We hear compliments every day about our Teen and Young Adult Black Belts. They all share something common in their path to being amazing individuals.

They never quit.

Even when they participated in other activities, They never quit.

I know at times the kiddos fight us when we push. I know we fight pushing ourselves. Here's what I'm asking, and what I've followed in my life, Look to those you admire and emulate the behaviors you respect. Ideas and intentions don't change anything, it's only when effort is applied, that the world moves.

So, let's put forth the effort in all aspects of our lives. Let's fight the good fight even when it's hard.

Annual All School Class and Class/Individual Pictures

The All School Class is for every MTC student! Come enjoy the energy created by 100+ martial artists working together. June 2nd at 6pm we will congregate at Franklin Park(click for map) to hold a very big regular class (no regular classes that day). This is a great opportunity to see how many TKD big brothers and sisters you have to turn to for help and guidance.

AND This year we are excited to offer professional photos by local Photographer Steven Begleiter. He will be taking individual photos at MTC from 3-6pm then taking group shots at the Park at 7pm. Group and individual shots, a Memory Mate folder and Jpeg image will be $35. Forms will be available at the dojang and must be turned in by May 31st to reserve your individual session.

Group shots will be taken of everyone and you don't HAVE TO purchase a group photo to be in it. Black Belts should reserve your Individual session to renew your photo in the dojang.

Competition Adds so Much to Your Life

Being in this art/sport we are given so many great opportunities for personal growth. We perfect our skills in class and practicing on our own, but in the arena of tournaments we are able to safely stretch past our previous personal bests and become more. The objective of so many people in our current society is to orchestrate their lives in such a way that challenges are avoided. We are of the thinking that meeting the challenges in life head on is what adds depth and meaning to our lives and shapes us into the leaders and achievers in all areas of our lives.

Although tournaments are a source of stress for many, they are a relatively safe environment to develop and test your skills in taekwondo AND life; skills in personal improvement, in handling stress, in time management, in leading a healthy life and maybe most importantly that nothing worthwhile was ever gained by being a spectator to life.

Enjoy a Fun, Meaningful Summer

The greatest part about summer is the greater flexibility we all have to explore the things that truly interest us. We are privileged to offer our summer cams to our students so they may spend some time exploring Taekwondo with a greater than average intensity as well as developing lasting bonds with their peers and MTC Black Belts.

In June we offer camps for all belt levels (even beginners) ages 4 to 12.

Two weeks of the Kickin’ Summer Off Right Camp for kids age 7-12 will be held June 13th-17th and 20th-24th, 9am to 3 pm daily. (1 or both weeks)

Li’l Kickers day camp for ages 4-6 wil be held June 13th-17th, 9-11.

These 10 days will include all facets of Taekwondo instruction,ceramics construction and decoration, other art exploration lots of games and some fun in the sun.

$205 for week one, $215 for week two or $395 for both weeks. Early registrants receive a $20 discount before May 15th.

Campers who reach for their potential doing both weeks of camp will test for their next belt on the final day of camp.

Keep It Clean

Recently there have been a few things mistakenly taken at the Dojang. If you are here when the white and yellow belt classes are switching you can understand the possible confusion-it can be quite a zoo. To minimize this effect we are asking everyone to get a TKD gear bag: a bag dedicated to hold you TKD stuff to and from Taekwondo and which will hold your shoes and clothes during class. Please take it to and from Taekwondo every class and do not store it in a cubby for later use. We are asking this of all our students, including the upper belts who are looked up to by so many younger and lower belt ranked students.

Dinner and a Show

This is by far the most fun event we put together.

Our Annual Spring Gathering, Dinner and a Show, is scheduled for May 6th at 5:30PM. We will kick off the evening with the Kick-a-thon. This portion of the event is a display by any willing participants who have secured pledges, of 1 minute of intense kicking.

The show will continue with a Talent Show displayed by MTC students. All MTC students are invited to participate with any kind of talent. We are looking for all ages and ability levels, participants need not be experts. Acts should adhere to a 3 minute or less performance. For dinner we will have Bulgogi (Master Rosbarsky’s specialty) accompanied by pot luck sides.

Tickets will be available for sale at the dojange. $5 for Adults, $3 for Kids and just $12 for a family of 4.

The Colored Belt Test has Changed

The next colored belt test originally scheduled for ~~May 13th~~ has been moved up to April 22nd.

As always in preparation for belt tests daily poomse practice at home will make the overall experience better. You will go from just making it through to really being able to add your own flavor to your Poomse (and derive enjoyment from it).

Taekwondo is a Varsity Letter Sport in MCPS

On February 8th at the MCPS Public School Board meeting (video) after months of meetings and reworking the proposal TKD gained Varsity Letter status in Missoula County Public School. Students from Hellgate, Big Sky, Sentinel and Seeley have the opportunity to receive a Letter as recognition for their achievement in TKD.
We worked hard to achieve this for our students and future Taekwondoists with the primary motivation being to give all of our student athletes the opportunity for positive recognition among their peers.

In addition to the MCPS standard requirements related to grades, code of conduct and obtaining a physical...

the TKD specific requirements are:
1. A student must be a USA TKD member.
2. A student must attain a 2nd Geup Red Belt or higher and compete as such.
3. A student must maintain (and document) an average of 5 hours per week of instruction, condition and practice for 50 weeks of the year.
4. A student must compete in at least 1 MTA sanctioned tournament during the year.
5. A student must be financially responsible for all competition entry fees and costs associated with travel.

Participant from any TKD Club may letter as long as their club adheres to the guidelines set forth. Including necessary equipment, insurance, Kukkiwon certified instructors, and a Booster Club.

We laid out these requirements to ensure we are recognizing the truly outstanding student athletes who dedicate their hearts to their journey in the martial arts. These requirements will allow all of our committed students to be recognized for their achievement not just a select few who make the varsity team.

This year MTC’s Spring Break will fall on April 4th-8th. (We follow the MCPS holiday schedule.) We have learned that to develop well rounded martial artists and people it is important to support individual family development. We feel this is, in part accomplished by utilizing the holidays for family togetherness and self rejuvenation. In times, though, when on misses classes because of illness or a conflict our recommendation is to make up the missed class(es) within the month of the miss with a comparable class ( one of the same or similar level on a different day or one of a different level on the same day.)

The Case for Tournaments

In our daily TKD lives we come to class, we learn and practice new and familiar techniques, we interact with our classmates and go home. This level of experience is enriching to the participant in proportion to what they put in it—in other words, You get our what you put in. If the same individual decides to put themselves on the line by participating in a tournament, they will feel a greater sense of urgency to:

(1.) Know their form as well as they possibly can and

(2.) Be comfortable with a varied set of tools and circumstances in the sparring arena.

In short, one will need to step up their game to prepare for a tournament. In so doing , they will enhance their knowledge (mental), spend more time interacting with their fellow martial artists (emotional) and develop a greater skill level (physical); all with the tools which are currently available to them which weren’t fully utilized before. One may ask, “Couldn’t someone experience this without committing to a tournament?” and, yes, that may be the case, however, one will be far more successful in having a meaningful TKD experience if they incorporate a tangible goal—like medaling or participating in a tournament.

Then come the benefits of the actual tournament participation. Aside from the obvious attainment of a medal or trophy, one will surely be rewarded with the self confidence that comes from preparing for a challenge and meeting it head on. There is also a great social side effect of becoming familiar with a grander picture of martial artists all across our state, country and world who, for the most part, do what we do at MTC, train to be the best possible martial artist and person they each can possibly be.

So, decide, train, participate and grow.

Spring Tournaments

Good experiences can be found at Montana tournaments throughout the Spring. We recommend: Philipsburg on March 19th, The Great Falls Tournament on Aprils 9th, The Billings Tournament on April 9th, the Livingston Tournament on April 30th and The Montana State Championships in Belgrade on May 21st. When registration forms and other information are available for these events they will be tacked to the bulletin board (and available online to print).

Some reminders about tournaments:

Secure gear to use in advance. Most items are in stock at MTC but some items may need to be ordered so place orders 2 weeks in advance.

A little preparation will provide the best chance of a positive, meaningful, fun experience. Practice your Poomse at home. Attend Sparring class. Get good sleep, eat nutrient rich foods, stay hydrated and be “in the moment” while training and on competition day.

The Great Falls, Livingston and Belgrade tournaments will fill the Varsity Letter requirements for MCPS high schoolers.

MTC Black Belt Test on April 2nd

The test will be 10AM-6PM and will include testing in all areas of TKD as well as Judo and Hapkido basics which make up our curriculum. There will also be board breaking by each candidate.

Spectators are welcome. We encourage any interested students to come watch any portion of the test. Students can get a feel for what they may be in for.

MTC National Team

Congratulations to this year’s team planning to travel to San Jose to compete in USAT Junior Olympics and Senior Nationals. They are: Lydia Rosbarsky, Hunter Goodman, Scott Graham, Austin Graef, Abbey Ardiana, Dylan Ardiana, Jeff Quackenbush, Taiga Gamell, Claire Zellmer, and Ryan Cagle.

The team has begun training and qualified at the MT State Qualifier February 26th. Most of them are off to San Diego in March to compete at on of 3 USAT Regional Qualifiers which will give them some more experience with the Lajust Electronic Hogu and give them the opportunity to gain a seeded spot at the national events. This tournament is perfect for tournament first-timers and for those looking to gear up for the Spring Tournament season in Montana. For parents wondering if now is the right time to do a tournament, first, gauge if there is interest, if so then this tournament is the perfect one- friendliest environment, least driving, least expensive and most FUN.

Our previous FUN Tournaments have been great successes, in that they provide a wonderful gathering for all our students and a great learning tool for both parents and students.

To sign up please return a registration form by Friday, February 4th. Registration Forms an Information can be obtained at the dojang or at missoulatkd.com.

All individuals planning to compete must be in full uniform. Sparrers must have their own forearm and shin/instep pads, mouthpiece and groin cup (total cost $23 for Girls and $33 for Boys). Please purchase these items before the day of the tournament. Some sizes of gear are currently on order and slated for arrival Friday 2/4. To help our event run fluidly please order and pay for your gear Monday thru Thursday at MTC and plan to pick up Friday 2/4. Full gear also includes the helmet and chest protector all these items may be purchased at Missoula TKD but you are only encouraged to buy the helmet and chest protector if you know you will be attending tournaments outside the FUN tournaments as well, otherwise please feel free to borrow these 2 items from MTC.

Please note there is a staggered start time (9:45 for white and Yellow Belts and 12:00 for green and blue belts) and concessions all day by the Booster Club.

Remember: Red and Black Belts will compete for free if they help with refereeing and tournament operations.

TKD Families can make the most of Valentine's Day by bringing their kids (potty trained through 12 years old) to the Fun Night at TKD.

The MTC Booster Club is hosting a Fun Night at TKD on February 13th. There will be dinner and games from 5-10PM.

The cost is $15 per child and $10 for each additional child per family.

This Fun night will operate much like TKD Movie Nights except that there will be no one sleeping over. An Italian Dinner will be served and there will be games and activities for all.

Summer Camps at MTC will run the frist 2 weeks after MCPS lets out for the summer: These will be day camps running from 9AM-3PM for 6-12 year olds (one or both weeks) and 9AM-11AM for 4-5 year olds (week 1 only).

MTC Family Member Profiled on ABC Family Show

A long time MTC family member, Jeff Jones, will have his story told on ABC Family's 700Club this month. The piece will air on Friday February 4th at 10AM.

Jeff, a senior blue belt at MTC, spent a few days last fall being followed by a film crew. He was interviewed and filmed going about his regular routine including a trip to workout at Missoula Taekwondo Center.

Jeff's is a story of turning an incredibly devastating life event into a catalyst for positive change in the lives of many. Since struggling with depression in his teens and surviving a suicide attempt he has dedicated himself to instilling hope in adolescents and inspiring them to choose life over suicide.

Electronic Hogu Seminar/Scrimmage and Montana State USAT National Qualifier

Master Rosbarsky, MTC and the MTA are hosting the Montana State Qualifier for 2011 Nationals in San Jose AND a seminar/scrimmage featuring the LaJust electronic hogu.

All athletes from Montana planning to attend USAT Nationals must qualify at the Montana State Qualifier on February 26th at 9AM.

The Seminar and Scrimmage are open to all MTA members and will be given by Master Rosbarsky, Master Dan Williams and Grand Master Scott Miranti. The seminar and Scrimmage will follow the Qualifier from Noon to 5.

The LaJust electronic scoring system is utilized on the National level and this will be the first ever use and presentation of it in Montana. All Taekwondoists are encouraged to join us.

Fun Tournament February 5th

For ALL MTC student - Beginners to Advanced.

Ease into the Tournament Season with the MTC FUN Tournament only for MTC TKD Family members.

The Goal of the FUN Tournament: Giving a great competition experience to all of our students while teaching everyone, students and parents, about the inner workings of a Taekwondo Tournament.

The FUN Tournament is a low stress way to experience TKD competition for the first time or to reengage after the long winter break. We encourage all of our students to participate not only to learn about TKD competition but also to experience the wide world of TKD outside of Missoula Taekwondo Center.

We will run 2 rings and enjoy a staggered start. Meaning all white thru Senior yellow belts will report at 9:45 and all Green thru Black Belts will report for competition at 11:45.

All Red and Black Belts (and Booster Club Volunteers) should report at 9:30 to ensure a smooth day.

The Booster Club will also offer full concessions throughout the day which should keep everyone fully charged and ready to engage in all the activities.

Registration is just $25 (about 1/2 the cost of most local tournaments) to encourage all MTC students to participate. Red and Black Belts who volunteer to help will compete for Free.

This tournament is designed to give all MTC students a gentle introduction into competing the first time or an introduction to the 2011 tournament season. We also will utilize this event to teach all parents and other spectators the rules of competition in TKD as well as what to do to ensure a positive experience for all.

Forms will be available at the dojang and at www.missoulatkd.com.

One Big Happy Family--Bigger is Better

We are entering our 10th year as Missoula Taekwondo Center and we have seen ourselves grow in numbers, knowledge and ability to positively affect the world. We look far different today than we did when we opened in 2002. Then: 40 students, 1 Quonset hut, 1 instructor. Now: 200+ students, 1 specially designed Taekwondo Training Facility, classes and workouts led by 10 different instructors and infinitely more opportunity for all of our students to learn and grow in our dojang and in the wide world of life.

As we started our steady growth Steve and I constantly came back to the core idea that he, Master R, is the secret ingredient to what makes Missoula Taekwondo Center be truly special. We do still realize the "magic" of Master R, but we can now see that so many of our students have taken what they have learned here and added more layers and depth that we all benefit from.

Our TKD family is the largest and most diverse in Montana and we are extremely proud of that. Our students who have found enough worth in their training here to stay on for years are still growing but more importantly they are finding ways to contribute to their peers, their seniors and their juniors. Because we are privileged to have so many perspectives each of you has the benefit of seeing martial arts and the world through hundreds of pairs of eyes.

Our daily training is enhanced through the energy created in a large body of like minded individuals and through the availability of numerous and varied training partners. We make every efforts to keep our ratios of instructors to students in the 8 to 1 or lower ratio. With our continued growth we are now offering a couple classes in addition to our current classes Mon and Wed Beginners 5:30-6:15 and Yellow to Sr. Green 6:15-7:15.

Black Belt Test Coming Soon

Each year at Missoula Taekwondo Center a group of new candidates and goal oriented black belts test together for different levels of black belt, 1st through 5th Dan this year. We strive to make this a meaningful experience by holding high expectations of the candidates and assembling a panel of well respected martial artists. The test requirements consists of an 8 hour physical test, 3 papers, teaching requirements, board breaking and numerous specific skills including 16 colored belt forms plus the black belt forms.

This year's candidates have been hard at work perfecting their skills and improving strength and cardiovascular fitness.

We are still working to find the date that will suit our candidates and our panel. We will notify all candidates and interested individuals when the information is available. TKD Ski Day--WooHoo!!!

All MTC students and families are invited to join our annual ski day at Discovery on January 22nd. We will leave for the hill from the TKD School at 8AM. Lessons begin at 10:30AM.

They give us great group rates (Adult $30, Kids $15) but you have to sign up in advance to get the rates. All sign up and payment must happen by Friday January 14th to get the discounted rate. Please make checks payable to Missoula Taekwondo Center.

Plans include a 1PMish lunch in the lodge (bring sack lunch or $$$) followed by a group run down Gold Bug. We plan to leave the hill around 4PM arriving back in Missoula around 6ish.

1st Women's Retreat @ Fairmont

New Classes and Slight Changes

We are so very blessed to have a continually growing MTC family. Each week we are seeing new faces join us and see others who are honing their skills and progressing. January is the time of year where we see an influx of new students, so in anticipation we are adding 2 new classes to the Monday and Wednesday schedule. Mr. Watson will be teaching both new classes: a Beginning class for 7 year old and up from 5:30-6:15 and a Yellow through Senior Green Belt class from 6:15-7:15. These classes meet in the Red Dojang.

We want to open these up to our current students first, so if either of these classes interest your family please confirm with Mrs. R that you would like to switch by December 15th. Then we will fill the rest of the openings with new students.

These additions will necessitate another slight shift. The very popular "At Your Own Pace" class will now be held on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 instead of Monday and Thursday.

TKD Family Pot Luck and Paddleball Tournament

Saturday December 18th we will host the 3rd Annual Paddleball Tournament followed by a Holiday Pot Luck.

All MTC students, parents and siblings are welcome to participate. We will hold 2 brackets: 11 and under and 12 and over. (We may adjust this based on actual participants.) 3 person teams (no substitutions). Each match will be refereed and made up of (2) 3 minute halves, with a 1 minute overtime if needed. Full rules will be available for view the week of the tournament. Sign up by December 16th on the front counter to participate in the tournament. Also, if you would like to play but do not have a team assembled yet, put the word out there about your free agency by jotting your name on the sign up sheet as well. Registration fee is $30 per team. This is a slight increase over last year to offset the cost of replacing paddles that are very well worn from paddle ball practice and games and to purchase a plaque for the dojang to be engraved yearly with the name of the overall winning team.

The Pot Luck is for our entire MTC Family and will begin at 2PM. Please plan to bring your favorite holiday dish to share, or if you don't have a culinary masterpiece bring drinks. :)

This is a crazy time of year for us all and we would like to offer this moment for us all to enjoy a simple gathering and enjoy some good food and competition.

First Night Demonstration

It is time to break some stuff!! (And to show off our other awesome skills.) ALL MTC students are welcome and encouraged to be part of the Demo Team.

Demonstration practices will begin December 7th and be every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00-7:30 through the 21st. There will also be practices over the Holiday Break on the 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th from 6:00-7:00. These practices may be extended depending on how the demonstration is coming together. There will also be a final rehearsal on the 31st at 11AM followed by lunch and then heading to the Mall for the Demonstration at 2PM. It is likely that we will also demonstrate at the Missoula County Health Fair on January 8th also at the Mall, time for this demo will be early afternoon exact time to follow.

At the BSMA Championships competition will be held in Poomse, Sparring and "Unique Forms" including Doubles Forms Standard, Doubles Forms Creative, Single Forms Creative and Weapons.

Missoula Taekwondo Center regularly takes 30+ athletes to this tournament and our team generally comes home with a team trophy in addition to the many trophies won by our individual athletes. But more important than the award brought home we always come home with a new appreciation for our own abilities and a great connection to and respect for the greater Montana Taekwondo Community.

Save Money and have a great time on the Bus. Again this year the MTC Booster Club has chartered a cushy Beachliner for the trip to Kalispell. The bus will leave from the NE corner of the Mall parking lot at 5:30am on Saturday and return the same evening after the tournament and dinner at King's Buffet. $20 per person or $15/person for families with more than 1 person riding.

The 7th Annual Missoula Taekwondo Championships held on October 16th was everything you might expect a tournament to be and a little more. This year in addition to the standard events we also added exhibition matches and a poomse division for Athletes with disabilities. The Athletes in these divisions, and all who watched, felt their hearts grow and their life's focus shift.

Thank you to every last member of our TKD family who pulled together to help offer this event to the Northwest Taekwondo community. The primary reason this event is so great is the loving nature of our TKD family. Thank you all once again.

Master Rosbarsky Appointed Dae Myung Regional Director

We, Missoula Taekwondo center, are a member of the International Dae Myung Moo Do Federation. What that means is we are connected to, have a lineage from, Grand Master Jae Ho Park and many others including Grand Master Martin Martin. Which gives us a depth of knowledge and support to sustain us in our martial arts and everyday lives.

Recently the IDMF underwent a restructuring due to the passing of long time president, Grand Master Karlo Fujiwara. Grand Master Martin was appointed President, which, in my opinion, positions us to experience growth and advancement in Taekwondo in the State. As part of the restructuring Master Rosbarsky was appointed Regional Director, charged with overseeing Western Montana. As part of his duties he will enable the network of schools to better communicate and share knowledge and will act as liason between individual schools and the President and Grand Master Jae Ho Park.

Long Awaited Movie Night/Lock In

Nearly every day we are asked when the next Movie Night will be. Finally we have a free weekend to host it.

Friday December 3rd at 7:30PM to Saturday the 4th at 8:30am we will have movies, pizza, popcorn, games and a little sleeping for our 7-12 year olds.

Sign up at the gym ASAP as it will fill up fast. The cost is $25 an you may fill out a Booster Club form to use funds from your Booster Club account.

Colored Belt Test

Our next colored belt test is Friday December 10th. Test times will be posted by Wednesday the 8th. To test please sign up on the front counter.

From yellow through senior red belt individuals should test every 3 months to ensure they do not become stagnant and have constant progression. Also all Sr Red Belts should continue the testing pattern every 3 months as a test leader to fulfill their Black Belt Testing Requirements.

We have found that regular practice outside of class is one of the biggest factors in creating confident and proficient martial artists.

For Poomse practice the Power Poomse DVDs have proven themselves to be incredibly useful. They are available at MTC for $30 for the Taeguek or Palgwe series or $50 for the set.

Missoula Taekwondo Championships

It is our honor to bring together out MTC family to host the Montana Taekwondo Community each year. The 7th Annual Missoula Taekwondo Championships will be Saturday October 16th at the RAM Activity Center, 1040 S 1st W in Missoula. Topping the last group effort will be a challenge, but I believe we can do it again this year.

We encourage everyone to take part in this event in at least one capacity. There are many ways to participate including: competition, refereeing, volunteering in various capacities, donations of food and other items to the Booster Club and of course just being in attendance to watch and cheer on the rest of the Missoula TKD Center family. Also this year we will host Master Williams on October 15th as he teaches a very informative MTA Referee Seminar. the seminar cost is $35 and may be taken by any willing adult or student over blue belt. We ask all MTC red and black belts to take this seminar if they have not already taken one.

To register to compete please fill out and return a registration sheet by Tuesday, October 12th. (Available at the dojang or www.missoulatkd.com but keep in mind that all MTC students registration fee is only $40.) All ages and belt levels are encouraged to compete, and competition will be in forms, sparring, creative forms and new this year we will be hosting divisions and exhibitions for students with disabilities.

There are many area volunteers will be needed including set up and take down, sales, data entry and concessions. There is a clipboard on the front counter with sign up sheets for all the various duties. We really appreciate the giving nature of our MTC Family and thank everyone in advance for helping out. The bond created through working toward a mutual goal gives great meaning to our lives.

The popular Building on Basics Sparring seminar hosted by Master Rosbarsky will take new shape this year. All those under 12 and below blue belt will meet 5-6:30 and all Teens and Adults and children over blue belt will meet 6:30-8.

This seminar is based on the theory that good basics are the best building blocks for a great sparring strategy. New students and those who have been competing for year will all benefit from this seminar.

The cost is $20 for tournament participants and $30 for non-participants.

Getting the Most out of Taekwondo-Poomse

Many people who call us seeking Martial Arts instruction for their children tell us their "kids need some discipline." We listen and calmly explain that our approach is not to discipline them but to hopefully build their sense of self worth by offering challenging, but attainable goals, so that they may come to feel that they are worth the effort it takes to have self discipline. This is reflected in Master Rosbarsky's unique approach of compassionate leadership. Consequently we are attempting to equip our student for, and gently urging them along each of their individual paths, to self betterment.

The two hours a week that most of our students spend in Taekwondo class is many times just not enough to fully prepare them to conquer all the challenges they will meet. For most people we watch their greatest struggle be Poomse. Poomse ( a set pattern of self defense against imaginary attackers) needs to be performed on a regular basis to be committed to memory. We have found through personal experience and other's accounts that the decision to be "good" at poomse is the first step along the path. The method we recommend to integrating poomse is to define a time, of 15 minutes or less each day, (like right before TV time) to dedicate to doing it.

We watch all of our students enjoy the feelings of accomplishment when they carve out time to practice and ask all MTC families to find a time that works so that we may continue to watch our students self confidence grow. It really can be a very small amount of time but the key is to make it routine and it does not even need to be every day but should be worked out to be done more days than it is not done.

An added benefit of individuals practicing on their own is the higher level of instruction possible in each class. If the students come to the teacher already knowing the alphabet and having a practiced vocabulary together they may begin to create a rich and meaningful story.

Tournament Planning/Kids Pay for Their Own

Learn how the Booster Club can enable your family to raise funds to offset your own out of pocket expenses for Taekwondo activities and gear. We call all available parents, competitors and supporters to a General Meeting on Wednesday October 6th from 5:30 to 6:30PM. This short meeting will cover many important issues regarding fundraising opportunities and tournaments including Nationals. With the tournament coming up, there will be lots to discuss.

Cookie Dough Sale

All MTC Booster Club families (joining is easy and only $5 per person (max. $15 per family)) may participate in the Cookie Dough Sale to earn money they can use for tournaments, gear, and fun TKD events. Pick up a cookie dough sheet and sell as much as possible. Cash prizes awarded for fastest to turn in $$ and form and for top sellers.
