Belt Testing Coming Up

Belt test preparation is a perfect way to imbibe your training with purpose. We recommend testing every 3 months for all colored belts.  Test readiness can be determined by the individual student but we highly encourage being fully prepared so you may approach the test with an, “I can’t wait to show all that I have worked hard to learn.” Instead of, “I hope I did enough to get by.” All Belt Test Requirements are available to download at missoulatkd.com
We also encourage checking in with an instructor to make sure you know what is required to test.  A private lesson may be just the right way to ensure that a student is fully prepared for a test.  See the posters on the bulletin board for available instructors.

We always shoot for holding our belt tests every 6 weeks, so students should participate in every other test until they reach black belt. The next test is scheduled for Friday, March 8th.

Belt Test

The next colored belt test will be Friday, January 25th. All students looking to progress to yellow– senior red belt should plan to test every 3 months. It is each student’s responsibility to sign up for the test when they can complete the requirements found at missoulatkd.com.
1 Poomsae class/test prep will be held the day of the test from 4:00-5:00 for all levels.
Testing times will be posted at the dojang. Sign up by January 23rd.

Colored Belt Test

Schedule permitting we hold belt tests every 6 weeks, but expect all colored belts to test at a rate of once every 3 months.  That means that if a student should test in every other test that is held.  If, a student did not test in our August 24th test they should be testing in this test.

The next installment of Colored Belt Test will be Friday, October 12th at MTC.

***The only class held on Belt Test day is a general Poomsae Class from 4:00-5:00.***

We appreciate that belt testing is an exciting and sometime anxiety causing event.  If you or your child has testing anxiety please let us help you through it.  Sometimes a peptalk will help sometimes scheduling a private lesson or helping a student come up with their own doable practice plan will get them over the lump of anxiety.

August 24th Belt Test

Our next colored belt test will take place on Friday August 24th.  Test times will be posted on August 22nd.  Students may test when they have learned all requirements.  Belt test requirements can be found at www.missoulatkd.com.

We always encourage our students to fit daily poomsae practice in their routine.  At most belt levels no more than 5 minutes per day is needed.  The Power Poomsae DVDs are still the best way to ensure proper practicing at home.  Available at MTC for $30 each or $50 for the entire set to take you all the way to black belt.

Also, remember to fill out your Dae Myung Application and pay your $15 annual membership fee before you can be promoted.

Belt Testing

Initially planned for June 22nd, our next test will be June 15th.

Please sign up in advance for this and all tests.  The cost of all colored belt tests is $25

The Way Testing Works:  We require at least 3 months between each belt test ( a minimum of 2 tips are required to be eligible to test) and recommend no more than 4.5 months. We aim to hold belt tests (not tip tests which are held in class on or around the last class day of each month)  every 6 weeks, so there should be one happening when you are ready to test.

Belt Tests happen on Fridays and you must signup in advance.

Tests are cumulative, so be prepared to be tested over all that you have ever learned in TKD.  Review old techniques and be prepared to show any and all poomsae up to your current level.

Become More of YOU- Tournaments and Tests

We say it all the time, but Taekwondo is so much more than kicking an punching.  It is a way to discover who and what you truly are, and maybe, shape yourself into someone you are truly proud to be.  Built into Taekwondo are obstacles that require each person who chooses to take them on to grow into something greater than they were before.  Before you know it these small steps of competing at a tournament or testing for you next belt have begun to amount to a greater you.  A you, you are proud to be.  Choosing to step on the mat is more than most people ever do, but the opportunity for growth in knowledge, ability and self respect are nearly endless when you take advantage of opportunities for growth.  So you have made it this far onto the mat now jump in and take a chance to be even greater.  Sign up for the next test or tournament your possibilities for growth are endless.

The Importance of Testing-Recommended Timeline

Consistency is supremely important in making taekwondo a catalyst for growth in your life.

Tip Testing happens monthly. We aim for the last class day of the month, but it does not always work out that way.  Consistent attendance is the best way to make sure to be present for each tip test.  White belts will receive 2 tips before being tested for their Senior White Belt in class.  Testing for yellow through Senior Red Belt happens at MTC every 6 weeks, but students should test every 3 months. (Belt Requirements) The 3 months pace keeps students from getting complacent and in a state of constant growth and improvement.  Test requirement sheets are available at the front desk.

Always Growing---How to Know When to Test

Belt Testing at Missoula Taekwondo Center is a constant process.  We hold tip tests monthly, colored belt tests every six weeks, and black belt tests every year.  Making a total of 38 days worth of tests each year.  All of this testing is to foster constant growth in each person's Taekwondo ability and life aptitude.  We want our students to be constantly expanding their knowledge, physical ability and their sense of self.

Tip tests are generally held the last class day of the month but not always so consistent attendance is important because it is all about showing up and doing your best.  To test for yellow--sr. red belts we encourage testing every 3-4 months (2 tests required to attain sr blue-sr red) This is a suggested time line but above all else we want to be certain all students will have a positive testing experience so please feel free to ask us if you have questions or concerns about test readiness.  Also test requirements are available online for free or at the dojang for $.50.  Poomsae sheets are $1 each and are a great tool along with the Power Poomsae DVDs.

We intend for testing to be a growing and learning process for all students and adequate preparation in consistent attendance and at home practice are the most important elements.

Belt Testing

Hopefully I can answer some of the many questions about tests and open the doors for more questions to be answered.
The next belt test will be held on September 23rd.  We generally hold group colored belt tests every 6 to 8 weeks, however, students should test every 3-4 months. Colored Belts should have a minimum of 2 tips to test.
Poomsae is a required element at each test, as are kicks, strikes, blocks, self-defense and terminology.  White belts age 7 and older are required to know Taeguek 1, white belts age 4-6 will perform Basic Form 1 (with or without help). Yellow belts and above will be tested over 1 new Taeguek and 1 new Palgwe at each test and should retain all previous forms.  When testing for Sr. Yellow one should know T2 and P1, for Green T3 and P2, and so on.

The sign up sheet or the next test is on the bulletin board. Please sign up and pay the $25 testing fee 1 week in advance.

from the desk of Mrs. Rosbarsky

The Belt Requirements Page on the webpage can be helpful in preparing to test.  It will have the requirements in .pdf format and several pictures and video to help with the different kicks, strikes, blocks and stances.  (The test may not be limited to the requirements list, but also include other techniques learned  in class).

The Colored Belt Test has Changed

The next colored belt test originally scheduled for May 13th has been moved up to April 22nd.

As always in preparation for belt tests daily poomse practice at home will make the overall experience better.  You will go from just making it through to really being able to add your own flavor to your Poomse (and derive enjoyment from it).

Our wish for all of our students is to have their tests be a life enhancing experience.  If you have a question about test readiness please ask Mrs. Rosbarsky.

Colored Belt Test

Our next colored belt test is Friday December 10th.  Test times will be posted by Wednesday the 8th.  To test please sign up on the front counter.

From yellow through senior red belt individuals should test every 3 months to ensure they do not become stagnant and have constant progression.  Also all Sr Red Belts should continue the testing pattern every 3 months as a test leader to fulfill their Black Belt Testing Requirements.

We have found that regular practice outside of class is one of the biggest factors in creating confident and proficient martial artists.

For Poomse practice the Power Poomse DVDs have proven themselves to be incredibly useful.  They are available at MTC for $30 for the Taeguek or Palgwe series or $50 for the set.

A Little About MTC Operations, Testing and Questions in General

Each Taekwondo Class has its own flavor, but we do follow a rough guideline each month when devising each class curriculum.  Each month we use the 3rd week to teach self defense techniques, which in the beginning are based on simple escape and evasion techniques then progress to eventually fully incorporate Hapkido and Judo techniques.  We also strive to have Tip Tests on the last class day every month.  To maintain a flow and a sensitivity to the greater schedule of life outside the dojang we sometimes adjust these dates to fit better into life's flow.  For instance: the August tip tests were shifted to not add any additional stress to the first day of school for so many.

Our guidelines for testing and tips say that one should have 2 tips before testing for the next rank.  This is to hopefully keep students on pace to test roughly every 3 months.  To keep individual growth constant, we recommend keeping close to this schedule, but if there are questions about this please do not hesitate to ask.

In fact, please feel free to bring us your questions, comments and concerns about any subject-we value any opportunity to make your family's Taekwondo experience more meaningful.

Upcoming Belt Test

September 10th will be our next colored belt test. Sign up on the front counter (please mark your own calendar with the date and inform MTC by September 7th if you will not be participating.)
Preparation for the test should include regular class attendance as well as work outside of class to brush up on things like poomse or other spots that may be worrisome.  Please ask if you are unsure of the requirements for your next test, sheets are available to inform you of each level’s requirements.

Belt Test and Keepin’ Up in the Summer Time

Our summer time belt test will be held on Friday, July 30th.  Times will be announced the week of the test and are dependant on the belt range and total number of test takers.
Please sign up in advance on the front counter.  If you are unsure of your test readiness please consult Mr. or Mrs. Rosbarsky we will be happy to help assess your skill level and analyze if all requirements are met for testing.
One very important  part of testing that serves to hold many back from testing when they are otherwise ready is Poomse.  To avoid anxiety about Poomse knowledge and to boast readiness we recommend that every student own the Power Poomse DVD set which features Master Rosbarsky performing all Taeguek and Palgwe Poomse.  The DVDs are $30 each at Missoula Taekwondo Center and on amazon.com or you may purchase the set of 2 for $50 only at MTC.
Let there be nothing that holds you back from progression.

Colored Belt Test

Our next colored belt test is Friday November 7th from 5:30-7:30PM. To test, please sign up on the front counter.

Our recent tests have been great. We feel this is because individuals are taking the initiative to practice on their own in addition to maintaining regular attendance. This shift started to happen about the time the Poomse DVDs became available. They are a great resource which enables students to take responsibility for their own progression through daily practice.

From yellow through senior red belt, individuals should test every 3 months to ensure they do not become stagnant and have constant progression. Upper belts who have not tested recently should see Mrs. Rosbarsky to help develop a time line for progression.
