FUN Tournament on February 7th

Originally scheduled for January 10th (but moved so as not to coincide with the MTC Demo Team's Missoula County Health Fair Demonstration at Southgate Mall), The FUN Tournament will take place on February 7th at 10am.

This will be our second FUN Tournament, the first being just this past September. The September tournament was a wonderful success in that we accomplished all we set out to do. Giving a great competition experience to all of our students while teaching everyone, students and parents, about the inner workings of a Taekwondo Tournament.

For this February 7th tournament, we will make the experience even better by running 2 rings simultaneously throughout the day, thus making the sparring portion pass twice as fast and finishing the tournament far earlier. The Booster Club will also offer full concessions throughout the day which would keep everyone fully charged and ready to engage in all the activities.

Registration is just $25 and ALL MTC students are encouraged to participate, as this will be the best opportunity to discover the tremendous value to be found in testing on'ts self and enjoying the camaraderie of shared experiences.

Taekwondo competition is fun, challenging and rewarding and it is a gift that you may only experience if you first take the step to join in. This tournament is designed to give all MTC students a gentle introduction into competing the first time or an introduction to the 2009 tournament season. We also will utilize this event to teach all parents and other spectators the rules of competition in TKD as well as what to do to ensure a positive experience for all.

Forms are available at the dojang and at www.missoulatkd.com.

Please plan to attend and engage in friendly competition with your fellow MTC students.

Want to Take your TKD to a New Level?

Every MTC student should consider the option of competing in a large tournament like Junior Olympics or Senior Nationals, and it is wise to begin preparations early. After all there are physical, mental and financial preparations to take care of. Competing at qualifying events and other tournaments for preparations should happen throughout the spring, and fundraising to defray the costs are best started in early spring.

There will be a meeting for anyone (parents, guardians, family members and students) who have even the slightest interest in competing at the national competitions this July, AND any other tournaments coming up this spring. The meeting is Wednesday January 14th at 6pm. All belts and ages are encouraged. We will discuss the tournaments, the qualifying tournaments, fundraising, workouts and travel as well as address any concerns and questions.

These tournaments are a great opportunity for any interested martial artist to participate in one of the worlds largest sporting events. this is not just an opportunity for those who believe they are superstars in Taekwondo, but it really is for anyone who is willing to dedicated themselves to accomplishing a task. Ages 6 and up, Yellow through Black Belts are welcome.

USA Taekwondo will host the National events for 2009 in Austin, TX June 30th-July 5th.

Please plan to attend the meeting or call Mrs. Rosbarsky to let her know you are interested.

Girls Night In

We are going to host the first ever MTC Girls Night In on January 17th. This event will run from 6-10PM and is for all MTC "girls." This includes students, siblings and their mothers, grandmothers and spouses.

We won't spend the night, but feel free to bring your bean bag or sleeping bag to lounge on. also please bring a tub or bottle of you favorite (or less than favorite) beauty product you would like to swap. This could include the deliciously scented thing that just is not right for you or something you love and want everyone else to love. Sign up on the front counter, and join us to relax and enjoy each other's company.

New and Renewed Events in the New Year

Over the last year, we have been touched and excited to see our TKD family grow together and develop bonds that far surpass simple acquaintanceships. We have a new definition for what we do that includes not only being Martial Arts instructors, but also life mentors, relationship catalysts and in a very meaningful way social directors. We realize that when we creat opportunity for gathering outside of regular class, we are truly building a community of like minded individuals who have bonds that are as string or stronger than many blood related families and we are humbled to see such an amazing group of people who's initial motivation for gathering was to train in Martial Arts at Missoula Taekwondo Center.

To continue to develop these bonds, we will host a number of fun activities in the near future.

First on December 20th we will have the First Annual MTC Paddle Ball Tournament (click here).

On December 28th, we plan to go as a group to the Lady Griz game at 7pm. Further information and sign up are on the front counter.

We will host the 2nd MTC FUN Tournament on January 10th for MTC students only. We will hold competition in 2 rings for the duration of competition cutting the length of the day down considerably. This is a great opportunity for our students (and their parents) to compete and learn in a very friendly environment.

We will host our first ever Girls Night In on January 17th. For MTC girls and their sisters and mothers ONLY. More details to follow.

Back again this Winter is the MTC Ski Day to Discovery planned for January 24th.

Also this winter and spring we plan to arrange more bus travel to tournaments and other events. Please plan to join us at the Booster Club Meetings to have a say in the planning.

MTC Paddle Ball Tournament and Holiday Pot Luck

Join us on December 20th for our First Annual MTC Paddle Ball Tournament and Pot Luck. The Paddle Ball Tournament will begin at 10AM with a pot luck to follow at approximately 2pm.

A common way to warm up at TKD is a game we play which resembles street hockey, but is played with the paddles we use to kick. We call it Paddle Ball and those who have played feel that it will someday soon be recognized as an Olympic Sport. All kidding aside Paddle Ball is a very competitive, fun and highly athletic game.

To participate in the tournament, individuals (students, parents, or siblings) should form teams of 3 and sign up on the front counter. Competition bracketing is planned for under 12 and 12 and over. Groups should bring 5 canned food items or $5 as registration fee.

All MTC Family members are invited to bring a pot luck dish and share some good times at our Holiday Pot Luck following Paddle Ball Competition. Plan to join us for some great Holiday fun.

Thank you all!

The 5th Missoula Taekwondo Championships was a great success due to the great volunteer effort of our TKD family at MTC. I am so proud to be a part of such a giving and loving group. Before the tournament, parents, siblings and students offered their support by signing up to help and to donate items for the Concession Stand. Volunteers made quick work of set up and concessions prep on Friday. The day of the tournament people readily filled their posts: people helped sell equipment, door admissions, button sales, concession sales, ring management, running the holding area and computer operation. Every area was covered and done so in an efficient and pleasant way so that at every turn, competitors and spectators repeatedly had a good experience. I heard many positive comments about all facets of our tournament.

Throughout the day, I was repeatedly asked "How can I help?" Often I was unable to come up with something for all of those volunteers, but was proud to be surrounded by so many giving people.

We want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for being the kind of group we want to organize this event for, it is a lot of work, but every year it is so reinforcing to see everyone come together and grow from the experience of participating and volunteering.

Get on the Bus!!!

The Big Sky Martial Arts Championships will be in Kalispell on November 15th. Once again the Missoula Taekwondo Center Family will be taking a Motor Coach (with cushy seats ad bathroom). This is always a great tournament and we are excited to have the opportunity to build our "family" bonds through Taekwondo. All family members and students are welcome.

The bus ride is $15 per person. Checks are to be made out to the MTC Booster Club. Students under 16 must have a chaperone. sign up by Wednesday the 12th.

Part of our Family Needs our Support

Recently two of our students immediate family members passed away. Diane Schmidt, mother of Rachel, Tucker and Cass; and Lynn Montgomery, father of Dustin and Jack both died of natural causes in October.

In this time, let us all not hold back our love and support for both of these families.

The Schmidt Family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the West Side Little League (3400 Spurgin Rd Missoula,MT 59804 406-721-9378‎) in Diane's name.

The Montgomery Family asks that Donations be made to the Montgomery Children's Memorial Trust Fund at First National Bank of Montana (201 North Higgins Missoula,MT 59807 406-829-2666).

We offer both families our love and support in any way you may need.

Help Plan for 2009 at the Booster Club Meeting 11/5

November Meeting

The Booster Club had a very successful event running the concessions and button sales at the MTC Championships on October 25th. The monthly meeting on November 5th from 6-7PM will be used in part to decide how the funds should be utilized, to discuss upcoming tournaments including Junior Nationals in Austin Texas, recap the Fall's fundraising and plan the Winter and Spring of 2009.

The Booster Club is open to all MTC Families. Utilizing the Booster Club is easy and individuals can join for $5 per year or $15 for a lifetime. Those who are interested in facets of the Booster Club or are interested in traveling to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs or Austin, TX for TKD event coming up in '09 should attend this meeting.

MTC Food Drive

In September and October of 2008, the Missoula Food Bank had a 27% increase in its usership, and donations have not stepped up to match this increase.

In searching our brains for ways to give, this one seems like a no-brainer. We began our food drive with the donations from the Halloween Party and will continue through November 24th.
Items most needed are beans, rice, canned tuna, canned soup, canned beans and cereal. All nonperishable foods are welcome.

Please drop off your donations by the front desk.

Demo Team Practices Starting up for First Night

The First Night Demonstration Team is open to every MTC student who is interested and willing to dedicate themselves to make it to the practices to be held in December. Please sign up in advance at the Dojang.

The Missoula Taekwondo Center Demonstration Team will be performing for the 7th year in a row at First Night Missoula, a citywide New Years Eve celebration. We will perform at the Mall at 2PM December 31st as well as teaching a class at the downtown Dance collective. Then the MTC Demo Team will demonstrate again the following Saturday at the Missoula County Health Fair also at the mall.
This experience is open to all MTC students from white belt to black belt and every age from 4 years old and up. This is an opportunity for our students to show their friends and family all of the great things they work year round to perfect.

Practices will be twice weekly in December and will also be held during Winter Break. A schedule will come in next month's newsletter.

Colored Belt Test

Our next colored belt test is Friday November 7th from 5:30-7:30PM. To test, please sign up on the front counter.

Our recent tests have been great. We feel this is because individuals are taking the initiative to practice on their own in addition to maintaining regular attendance. This shift started to happen about the time the Poomse DVDs became available. They are a great resource which enables students to take responsibility for their own progression through daily practice.

From yellow through senior red belt, individuals should test every 3 months to ensure they do not become stagnant and have constant progression. Upper belts who have not tested recently should see Mrs. Rosbarsky to help develop a time line for progression.

Missoula Taekwondo Championships

We, Missoula Taekwondo Center will host the 5th Annual Missoula Taekwondo Championships on October 25th. Hosting this event is our opportunity to bring our MTC family together and host other Taekwondo enthusiasts from throughout our region.

We have loved this event in the past because of the great spirit that our family has shown by coming together to provide our state with a fun, fair experience. There are many ways to participate including: competition, refereeing, volunteering in various capacities, donations of food and other items to the Booster Club and of course just being in attendance to watch and cheer on the rest of the Missoula TKD Center family. We encourage everyone to take part in this event in at least one capacity.

To register to compete please fill out and return a registration sheet by Tuesday, October 21st. All ages and belt levels are encouraged to compete, and competition will be in forms, sparring, creative forms and group forms. The Porter Family, who own the candy machine, will be paying the registration fee for 1 first time competitor from Missoula TKD Center. We will draw from on time registrations on Wednesday the 22nd.

There are many areas volunteers will be needed including set up and take down, sales, data entry and concessions. There is a clipboard on the front counter with sign up sheets for all the various duties. We really appreciate the giving nature of our MTC Family and thank everyone in advance for helping out.

Our tournament is our greatest and most fun gathering of the year and we look forward to sharing the experience with all of our Taekwondo Family.

“Building on Basics” Sparring Seminar

Mr. Rosbarsky will be hosting the “Building on Basics” sparring seminar in conjunction with the MTChampionships once again the Friday before the tournament on October 24th from 6-8PM at Missoula TKD Center.

This seminar is based on the theory that good basics are the best building blocks for a great sparring strategy. New students and those who have been competing for years will all benefit from this seminar.

The cost is $20 for tournament participants and $30 for non-participants.

To register please use the tournament registration form.

Announcement to All who Visit MTC Each Week

Each week those who do Taekwondo at Missoula Taekwondo Center come together to enjoy classes taught at 2305 Grant St in Missoula. When students come they also often bring with them parents, siblings, grandparents and many other supporters. We would be neglecting a great many people if we addressed only our students as part of our family.

We enjoy having such a large extended family. Having such a great group of supporters for each of our students will help ensure that they are successful in the pursuit of being a better person through martial arts.

We offer areas for spectators and for young siblings to utilize during class time and we encourage everyone to use them. We would like the focus though while in the dojang to remain on the fact that classes are being taught continuously and are affected by the noise and activity level off the mat.

We ask that all people while in the dojang allow the individuals receiving instruction to do so without unnecessary distractions like excessive noise. We are also happy to have the space for smaller children to play in the “Castle Room” and would like it to remain an inviting spot for any child who wishes to use it. For this we would like to ask all parents of children who use this or other areas in the dojang to leave them as clean or cleaner than when they arrived. We realize many individuals utilize these spaces and would like to ask every one to just take the moments before leaving to make sure any areas used are tidied up. Also the front dojang is increasingly used for classes and Poomse practice. We would like the primary focus in this room to be Taekwondo , whether it is a class or just individuals practicing, please allow individuals in this and all areas the ability to practice without excessive distractions.

We thank you all for supporting each MTC martial artist.

MTC Booster Club Seeks Active Leaders/Members

We call all available parents, competitors and supporters to a General Meeting on Monday October 6th from 6PM to 7PM. This short meeting will cover many important issues regarding fundraising opportunities and fun events. With the tournament coming up there will be lots to discuss. We also hope to arrange for some fun events this fall including a bus to the November tournament.
We thank Doug Ardiana for once again organizing the Cookie Dough Fundraiser. This is an opportunity for all students to earn money for the TKD accounts to be used for tournaments, equipment and travel to tournaments and seminars. Forms will be available in early October at MTC. Orders will be taken through early October with delivery of cookie dough coming before Thanksgiving.
Future meetings will be the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 6-7PM.

Taekwondo in the Olympics

For the third time Taekwondo Sparring was a full medal Olympic Sport. The United Sates took a 4 person team to August's Bejiing Olympics. Three of the team members were Siblings Mark, Diana and Steven Lopez.

And the fourth was 17 year old Charlotte Craig. The Lopez siblings competing marked the first time in 104 years that 3 siblings competed at the same Olympics in the same sport.
Although our team was small, they fought hard and came home with 3 medals for their efforts. Charlotte lost by 1 point in the quarterfinals, Steven and Diana came home with Bronze and Mark walked away with the silver. Previously Steven took gold in the 2000 and 2004 Games and was favored to win the highly cometitive Male Welter weight division this time, however, coming home with the bronze did not cause him to act slighted or betray the attitude of a true martial artist.
Lopez said, "I came here expecting to win a gold medal, but I guess it wasn't in the cards today. It's hard but I'm hapy with the bronze. I have two ways to look at it, either succub to it and think 'I should have been in the finals', but a champion goes out there with dignity and I wanted to prove to myself and others that I am the best. " About the future he said, "It encourages me to keep going. I am upset. I love winning. I hate losing, and in to way does this discourage me from wanting to go to the 2012 Olympic Games."
It was widely publicized that a fighter from Cuba kicked the referee in the face after being disqualified. We are saddened by this publicity overshadowing the great accomplishments of our hard working Martial Artists, but hope that this opens up discussion amongst our MTC family of what a true martial artist is and how they should handle difficult..even antering situations. Let's be the next true example to the world of what TKD is really about.

Belt Test - Friday, September 19th 5:30-7:30pm

We are excited to be offering a full Poomse schedule on Fridays to help get the dust off of all our Taegueks and Palgwes. These classes should help with test readiness.

There are a significant number of individuals who have fulfilled their time requirements for testing. Remember: Blue, Sr. Blue and Red Belts should continue to test every 3 months.

The testing fee for every colored belt level is $25. Regular classes will be cancelled on the 19th.

All MTC Students Called to Join FUN Tournament

September 6th at 10am, we will host our first ever in-school MTC only FUN tournament. All students are asked to participate regardless of age, rank, or length of time training. The cost is just $20 for competition in 1 or all events. Events will include Poomse, Sparring, Creative Poomse and Team Poomse. This will be a FUN tournament experience for brand new beginners and for those who have been around awhile.

All profits from this tournament will be used to purchase an electronic scoring system to permanently reside in MTC to be used for regular classes. This should enhance every MTC students class experience and future tournament performances.

Join our Online Community

We are always looking for new ways to enhance our student's experience and with the help of our web guru, Kim Sturre, we now have an online community that our "family" can use to keep in touch.

This community will help families coordinate with each other for car pooling to classes, tournaments and other events to save gas and to promote togetherness. We also encourage our students individual families to utilize the classified section to develop business contacts with fellow TKD families. Such as postings as to who is available to baby sit or who wants a sitter. There is also a section used to discuss TKD questions.

This community will be monitored daily and will be populated by TKD families who are invited to join. We recommend TKD families with young children create 1 account per family rather than for each small child.

All students receiving the electronic newsletter will automatically be invited to join and all other students must email Kim at MTCweb@bresnan.net to receive an invitation. [OR click on http://www.webjam.com/missoula_taekwondo , click on "Join this Webjam". This will send a invite request. Then sign up for an account and build a profile. E-mail if you have any questions] (Join the enewsletter by submitting the green form(Mrs. R has more.))
